Six thirty comes and I refresh my makeup in my office and change into a new blouse, a chiffon number just sexy enough to be noticeable but not so much as to make me feel exposed. The balance between my professional attire and my evening attire was a bit of a struggle at first. But I clearly have tried to adopt a style that can easily be adapted without too much of an effort. Alicia is still working diligently as I leave. She gives me a small smile and I am hellbent that woman will get a pay raise starting tomorrow. Her workload rivals what the men would have me doing so Grayson will also get a lecture about being a slave driver.

The short cab drive to the Milton has my arriving early but surprisingly as we park, I see Savannah descending from her car, the always present Barrett holding open her door. Funny that I suddenly realize other than my first morning of work at Gamble Industries he has been absent. I can’t say that I don’t miss his calm demeanor and being doted on like I was an adopted daughter. Paying the driver, I go to see if I can catch up to them before he drives off.

“Savannah!” I call out as I head towards the car. She is dressed to kill in a tight bodycon dress of deep burgundy and the highest of black patent leather stilettos. Rushing towards her I can see Barrett starting to walk to the driver’s door.

“Barrett! Wait!” I call out to him, but he lowers his towering frame into the car and pulls off. What the hell?

Savannah is carefully making her way towards me; she had either had a pre- cocktail hour or is regretting the choice to traverse the Manhattan sidewalks in what are essentially stilts. I meet her halfway and she throws her arms around me. The smell of her Chanel perfume is overpowering and also mingled with the odor of liquor. Savannah has always been a party girl but recently her alcohol intake is becoming more than a little worrisome.

“Ains! The slayer of dragons! You need to let the blond bob grow out and I am going to start calling you Khalessi. Girl, I bow down to the queen,” she goes to bow and nearly falls flat on her face. Catching her, I attempt to stand her upright, but she is swaying so much I am almost unable to do so. The valet comes over and helps me escort her into the restaurant. Patrons are staring holes into our backs as I ask to be seated in the back corner. Depositing her lithe form into a chair, I tip the valet and demurely ask that he instruct the waitress to bring us a large bottle of mineral water.

“Oh, hell no Ains! We need champagne! We need to celebrate the first of many triumphs against the men of mother flipping Monroe Enterprises!” her slurring is thankfully almost unintelligible because her voice is loud enough to carry.
